Graphics: NVIDIA ® GeForce ® GTX 1070 (Max-Q), with 8GB GDDR5 VRAM.Is the second one better than the first one? Read on to know. ASUS RoG Zephyrus M is the second laptop in this product line and ASUS has created a much better product this time, after listening to fans feedback on the first Zephyrus laptop. It is suspected the laptop screen is faulty and likely need to be replaced at a roughly the cost of a computer monitor.ASUS GM501GS may not be known to many but the ASUS RoG Zephyrus gaming notebook is known to many as one of the most innovative products out there. This time I paid a visit to the service centre. Fortunately, an external monitor using the HDMI port allowed me to continue using the laptop. It was impossible to read what was on the laptop screen. Then suddenly, the laptop screen started flickering. Should I replace the battery and/or repair the laptop screen (which is about 10% the original price of the laptop)?
So, now even if I wished to use the laptop without the laptop screen, I still have to keep the lid open to allow ventilation. When the lid is closed, the air vents are closed and there is no way for the air be drawn in nor exhausted by the fan. The laptop draws air from the top of the chassis to the bottom where it is exhausted. If you don't know, this laptop has an 'innovative' design - when the lid is open, it lifts the laptop of the table and opens the air vents. Because the laptop is not designed to be used when the lid is closed, the heat could not dissipate and damaged a component in the screen.
I only realised this when I woke up in the morning to find the laptop warm to the touch. My thought is that there were times the when the laptop lid was closed but the laptop woke up from its sleep to do some maintenance and anti-virus scanning. On top of that, there is a likely wait of 7 days depending on parts availability. If I don't like their quote, then they'll keep the evaluation fee. But Asus can't give me a quote until I pay them an evaluation fee of about USD45. It is suspected the laptop screen is faulty and likely need to be replaced at a roughly the cost of a computer monitor. All was well for 6 months (albeit without a battery). The battery was indeed bloated and literally popped out of the chassis when I undid the last screw. So, the only other option was to do it myself. I presume Asus would also charge me to remove the battery without replacing the battery. I emailed Asus and they said it was out of warranty and I have to pay for service and replacement battery. I was getting worried that the battery might damage the components, like the keyboard, or in a worst case, explode or start a fire. It was obvious when I put a ruler on it and a hump could be seen.
As the bloating happened over a period of time, it was only after 6 months from the start of the bloating that I really thought something was wrong. Initially, I was in disbelief when I noticed the keyboard having a slight hump. The battery is installed under the keyboard and started bloating after a year. The overheated chassis caused the battery to overheat.* At times, I could hardly place my hand on the keyboard due the heat. These two factors probably caused overheating of the chassis. A quiet fan also meant less air venting the heat which means less heat dissipation. Because of its slimness, heat dissipation was bad. The reasons for this purchase compared with other similar gaming notebooks with equivalent specs were:īut the two reasons were also the bane of the laptop. 2.5 years after purchase, the screen started flickering constantly, which Asus said that it probably needed to be changed. I had to do an emergency extraction of the battery. Please note that I am not condemning Asus nor its ROG products, but just bringing up the facts surrounding the failure of the product.Īfter 1.5 years, the battery bloated inside the laptop and almost exploded. But, it didn't last as long as my other laptops - Acer and Lenovo (8 years and 7 years respectively). I was impressed with this ASUS ROG Zephyrus GX501 laptop. I am sad to write this but need opinions as to whether to repair my laptop or not.
